Epcot SeaBase Aquarium Review (It’s Better Than You Think)

How often do you find an aquarium that’s just as exciting as a theme park? Our trip to Epcot’s SeaBase Aquarium honestly wowed me. It’s known as one of the must-visit spots in Epcot, but I wondered if it was actually worth it.

The short answer is yes. Yes, it is.

Epcot's SeaBase aquarium in Disney World

An Unexpected Delight

I have to admit, the first time I stumbled upon the SeaBase Aquarium, I wasn’t expecting much. “Just another aquarium,” I thought. But boy, was I wrong. Situated just beyond The Seas with Nemo & Friends attraction, this aquarium is an awe-inspiring experience that rivals some of the best marine exhibits in the world.

A Hidden Gem in Epcot

Located in the Future World section of Epcot, The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion is easy to overlook amidst the park’s more prominent attractions. However, those who venture inside are rewarded with one of the most immersive and educational experiences Disney has to offer. The journey begins with the fun Nemo-themed ride, which sets the stage for the underwater adventure awaiting you.

And don’t miss those gorgeous jellyfish on the attraction – they’re my favorite part!

Immersive Experience

From the moment you step inside the building, the ambiance is nothing short of quintessential Disney magic. The lighting, the soothing blue hues, and the gentle sound of water create a serene environment that transports you into an underwater world. It’s not just an aquarium; it’s an invitation into the home of rehabilitated creatures.

A Journey Beneath the Waves

The design of the SeaBase Aquarium is intended to make you feel as though you’re truly underwater. The massive windows of the main tank and the surrounding exhibits are strategically placed to give you a panoramic view of life beneath the waves. It’s a design marvel that allows you to see the marine life from various angles, making every visit a sight to see.

The Stars of the Show

The SeaBase Aquarium houses over 4,000 sea creatures, including dolphins, sharks, sea turtles, and an impressive number of colorful fish. The 5.7 million-gallon saltwater tank is the centerpiece, offering panoramic views of marine life that will leave you mesmerized.

Dolphins in Depth

One of the highlights is the Dolphins in Depth program, where you can interact with the bottlenose dolphins. It’s an educational and heartwarming experience that offers insight into the intelligence and playful nature of these incredible animals.

Turtle Talk with Crush

For families, the Turtle Talk with Crush is a must-see. This interactive show features Crush, the surfer-dude sea turtle from Finding Nemo, who chats with the audience in real-time. It’s a hit with kids and adults alike, combining humor with marine education seamlessly.

Sharks and Rays, Oh My!

The shark and ray lagoon is my personal favorite. Watching these majestic creatures glide through the water is both thrilling and calming. You wouldn’t think that a theme park has such a meditative place, but you’d be wrong.

The variety of species on display is impressive, and the informative placards help you learn about each one’s characteristics and habitat. My personal favorite animals to watch are the dolphins. I can’t believe how smart they are.

Beyond the Surface

Did you know that we’ve taken out at least two-thirds of the big fish in our waters, and one in three marine life populations have collapsed since 1950?

What sets the SeaBase Aquarium apart from other aquariums is its commitment to marine conservation and education. The exhibits are designed not only to entertain but also to educate visitors about the importance of protecting our oceans. And isn’t that the best way to teach young conservationists?

Informative displays and interactive touch screens provide valuable insights into marine biology, conservation efforts, and the challenges facing our oceans today.

Manatee Rehabilitation

One of the best exhibits is the manatee rehabilitation area. Here, you can learn about the efforts to rescue and rehabilitate these gentle sea puppies. It’s a harrowing reminder of the impact of human activity on marine life, but also a hopeful testament to the power of conservation.

I came into the aquarium with a sense of peace. I left the aquarium feeling motivated to start making changes in my life.

I was wrong. It’s not “just another aquarium.”

Educational Programs and Tours

The SeaBase Aquarium offers several educational programs and tours that provide a deeper understanding of marine life and conservation. Programs like the Seas Aqua Tour and the DiveQuest provide guests with the opportunity to explore the aquarium from a diver’s perspective. These behind-the-scenes tours are perfect for those looking to expand their knowledge and appreciation of marine ecosystems.

Final Thoughts

In a park filled with thrilling rides and cultural explorations, the SeaBase Aquarium might not be the first thing on your list. But it should be.

Whether you’re a marine enthusiast, a family with kids, or someone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the theme park, the SeaBase Aquarium is an escape into the big, blue world as Nemo and his friends put it.

So next time you’re at Epcot, take a detour to the SeaBase Aquarium. Dive into the depths of the ocean and leave with a deeper appreciation for our blue planet.
